CD of the week

Every week I will present a CD on this page and will motivate my choice. Let me know what you think of my choices or motivation.

The CD of this week is:

Dweezil Zappa: Automatic

Dweezil Zappa: Automatic

The CD of this week is Automatic of Dweezil Zappa. Dweezil is the son of Frank Zappa and is a very talented guitar player. I've known of his existance for quite a long time (ever since he produced the album Shampoo Horn with his group Z featuring amongst others his brother Ahmet), but didn't know any of his music until I was searching for other albums on which Mike Keneally plays. The first time I heard this album, I did't know what to think of it, but now it is one of my all time favourites. I could try to describe this album, but let me quote Dweezil's web-site:

Operating under the musical credo anything at anytime for any reason at all gave Dweezil the freedom to explore new territory. The album features thick layers of multi-tracked guitar textures, all perfectly executed and combined with wild rhythms and intriguing improvisations, adding nicely to the Zappa Family legacy which has provided alternative entertainment for those who have embraced it for over thirty years.

This kind of says it all. But hey, listen for yourself to the all-guitar rendition of George Bizet's Haberna and Les Toreadores from the opera Carmen or the Edward Van Halen style instrumental Purple Guitar. Great arranging, sounds and playing!
